After the contestants got back to the studio from lunch, we found our artwork put together in a collage on the wall to commemorate the moment and the event. On top of that @beeple_crap used the collage concept for his daily render in essence collaborating with all the contestants in one fell swoop. Amazing! 🙌

The Blue Period

All good things must eventually come to an end. In my final render, I bit off a bit more than I could chew in the time allotted. With the clock ticking, I quickly settled on a composition to focus on the finer details. Encouraged by the success of the fog effect previously, I decided to bring in post light fog for a moodier vibe in this scene.

The concept was all about a world restricted to blue, where a "rainbow anarchist" is spotted by authorities. Setting up the scene, I started facing a few snags. The fog, which I had quickly dialed in in my last render, was trickier to adjust now. Also, while trying to set up the spotlights in post, I kept hitting walls until I decided to slightly tweak my original plan.

Since the police drones I'd envisioned didn't feature foggy spotlights I made them bigger to give them more visual impact, but this threw off my composition, caused some unwanted light spill, and ate into the time I needed for final touches elsewhere.

In the end, I was alright with where things landed, considering the changes I made. It felt bittersweet that my strategy of focusing on composition, storytelling, and mass appeal was outdone by two very design-savvy pieces. Not too bitter since I made it quite far, but very sweet because the art created by @mellomograph and @brockett_josh was seriously impressive and the judging did them justice.

Contestants likely didn't focus much beyond the qualifiers, and being in the last qualifier bracket gave me even less time to plan my next move after advancing. The available assets were scarce, and many concepts had already been chosen in the preliminary rounds. To suit the small format's emphasis on large focal points, I devised an AI theme featuring a robot bust interacting with a human, providing scale and visual interest. I aimed for a slightly dystopian aesthetic, incorporating feminine touches to keep the interpretation open, broadening its appeal and sparking curiosity.

During our lunch break, I experimented with some rendering techniques for the upcoming round. I managed to produce a rough version of my intended creation. The octane post fog effect I picked up at lunch enhanced the desired appearance without extending render times. With the extra 15 minutes, I perfected the lighting and displacement maps and even added a flock of birds to occupy an empty space at the top of my frame.

After watching some of the other contestant rounds I strategized on my concept. I decided to create an ascension scene with the infamous spaceman. I realized that composition played a key role in judging since the format for the displayed art was on the X social media platform where the image is already cropped and the contestants art was 1/4 of that size. I made sure to separate my image into 3rds and give it plenty of vibrance to stand out among the competition. Sticking to the KISS moto I tried to keep it stupid simple with enough time to engage in contingency plans if/when plans fail since there is no time for troubleshooting. I locked in my scene composition, created a rainbow layer above the astronaut and built a quick mograph spline setup in another file to import into my main scene, this kept my workflow light and I was able to save the file and render and increment before I added big steps in order to have checkpoints incase of crashing and lockups. Thankfully everything worked as expected with a couple adjustments and I was still at 13 minutes. I used a minute to create some additional cloner dots for detail and in the last 10 seconds I even added a chicken and swiftly overwrote my output path since my IPR was resolving in under 4 seconds as planned thanks to @nvidia

What a night at Beeple Studios last night. It was a humbling experience to compete with such a talented group of artist from all over the world. Although I did not win, getting to round 3 of 4 was a feat that I’m pretty stoked on. Huge congrats to @brockett_josh and @mellomograph for bringing it hard till the end! As stressful as it got, I can’t wait till the next one! 😈

The highlight of my burn week was collaborating 4 ways with “Touch the Sky” artist @chromaforms, who provided a canvas for me to project my animations onto, and with @nay.tastic and Katy for spinning some rad tunes into the sunrise 🙌 🙏😍 🌄 what a dream!

I don’t normally share work stuff, but this one’s worth it.
I’m humbled to have been able to help the amazing team at @weidenkennedy to achieve greatness for @supercell by creating a mini documentary for @clashofclans that recently won two Grand Prixs at Cannes Lions, what an honor to be a part of such an amazing project 🙌 and work with such an amazing team!
I helped with some graphics and early conceptual development.
Also, since I don’t drink anymore, find me at burning man to help me kill this bottle and celebrate. 🥳
